NAJMA—From Silent Roots To Strong Leadership
In the sectors of Gujjar Basti, where women's voices are often unheard and confined within four walls, the Samanta Foundation's FLY Fellowship Program provides a space for change. It was here that Najma began her journey of transformation. While her path started with mastering the art of stitching, the greatest skill she developed was quiet confidence. Little did she know that she would soon command respect in her locality, breaking the silence that once surrounded her.

Once the formal fellowship ended, Najma confronted a familiar challenge: finding platforms to make use of her newly found skills and confidence. Although she still identified as a shy person, she was ready, if given the chance, to channel her abilities for the greater good.
That chance came during the annual Harela celebration organized by Parvat Youth Collective. During community visits, Najma volunteered to take responsibility for mobilizing community members and organizing the plantation drive in her sector.
Najma's remarkable leadership was immediately evident in her outreach efforts. In a community where female participation is rare, she successfully brought together a diverse group of over 30-40 participants, including women, children, and even a few men. This was a significant victory, as it provided a space for women to be the actors in her community. Her skills extended to logistics as she efficiently organized the distribution and plantation of over 50 trees. She shares,
“Initially, I was nervous and doubted myself. As I went into homes and met women and elders, I felt confident about the event. Even after the event, there were multiple people who reached out to me for trees and information regarding such plantation drives.”
Even after completion of the event, Najma visited each participant’s home to make sure the trees were properly planted, offering guidance and encouragement. She also committed to periodic follow-ups, ensuring that the fledgling saplings would be cared for.
The success of the Harela event in Gujjar Basti, under Najma’s leadership, stood out even among other locations, with community interest and tree distribution exceeding expectations.
Najma’s journey is a powerful reminder of what is possible when women are given the resources, trust, and encouragement to lead.
